Today, was the last day of the motivational camp. Quite sad. Melvin Chew will be leaving the camp. The instructor. Great guy. He was really humorous and since he was not a teacher, he could tell dirty jokes. We(class) became 'friends' with him, he had a marvellous way of teaching us. He taught us throguh little games, like passing a ball around. Another game was when each group member was supposed to say a few words that we had memorized yesterday. My group has 10 people so 30 divide 10 equals 3. So one person has to say 3 words. Melvin would go around each group and time us. Our group took 50.3 seconds (i think) BUt at least we were 4th and not last. One person would only say 3 words. You just have to remember what words you have to say. It was quite fun and brandon forgot his word for about 10 or maybe 20 seconds. I think that this game requires teamwork and maybe resilience(one of our school values).
Next, he talked to us abuot the power of BELIEFS. The power of believing is very VERY strong. Melvin Chew told us how strong it could be. He showed us a video called "MIRACALE MAN". It was about a guy who was very successful and he had a plane crash. The man was named Morris Goodman. Surgeons performed surgery on him and he could only breath with a respirator and they inserted plastic filaments into his leg to substitute his torn muscles. The doctor said the chances of him walking on his 2 legs were very slim. After a period of time, he switched off the respirator for a while and try to expand his lungs. After 3 to 4 months, it really worked! He could breath normally again. Next, he was working on walking with his 2 feet. He told his nurse that he would walk out of the hospital on his 2 legs and not with a wheel chair. It was accomplished but only after 10 months. The movie shows that beliefs are really strong. But of course if you belief you can fly, it won't happen.
Here's another example. A few scientists found some people who had fever. They gave one group real panadols and asked them to take it. And they gave the other group fake ones(sweets) instead. They told both groups it was panadol and surprisingly, both groups recovered miraculously.
Next example, Scientists found some people. Likewise, they gave both group caffine pills and one group 'sleeping' pills. They told the group with the sleeping pills that it was caffine pills and they were supposed to enjoy a whole day at the arcade. While they told the other group the caffine pills were sleeping pills and asked them to sleep in a room. Strangely, the same thing happened as the first experiment.
Third example, there was this man who had cancer. A doctor gave the man pills that could 'cure' cancer. The pills came from Japan. The man believed that what the doctor said was true and he took it everyday, went on exercising everyday and eating healthy stuff. Soon, after 2 to 3 months, the man was cured. The doctor revealed the whole truth to the man. The man had actually ate Vitamin C instead of medicine. He got so angry that he sued the hospital. The hospital had to pay the man $5 million. The man went back home thinking he had not recovered after 2 months, he passed away.
This shows that the power of BELIEFS are really strong. But of course you need to take action too. Taking action will allow you to tap into the hidden potential and you can see how powerful you are. Eventually, you will see the results. No matter if it is good or bad, you tried your best. THE BEST. It means you have already stretched yourself to the limit.
He also taught us how to study for our exams. For english, we have to speak more and read the newspaper, every night before we sleep. We have to randomly choose 5 words and memorize the meaning and how to use them.
For maths, we have to practise and practise and collect questions. If we see a hard question, we should write it down to collect and practise it even more.
For chinese, we have to do the same with english.
For science,is to read the summary of the chapters first. This helps you know what are the keywords you must circle. You will get the concept of the chapter easily. Create a clustermap or mindmap, they are about the same. This helps to combine everything together and you will see everything in a big picture.
There was also an appreciation ceremony for parents too. Melvin talked about how parents should coach us and not nag unless neccesary. After that, he told us to pass our love letter to our parents and hug and say I LOVE U!! Then, we could shake our teachers hand if we wanted too. I shaked both Mdm Sharifah and Miss Chia and said thank you for teaching me.
